The History
The idea behind Free Cakes for Kids is simple: we bake for families, who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. All cakes are baked 100% by volunteers, who operate locally and independently in their own private kitchens.
Founded in December 2008 by Henriette Lundgren in Oxford, Free Cakes for Kids has grown to nearly 60 groups and many more volunteers across the country. As a shared idea, it is open to anyone who cares for cake and their community.

The Cambridge edition
The Cambridge group, led by Group Coordinators Claire Eudall and Rosalyn Scott, started in March 2014 and has since baked over 90 cakes for deserving families. We operate mainly in central Cambridge but consider requests from surrounding areas. The group comprises over 20 keen bakers, some professional but most home bakers, who are passionate about baking and enjoy sharing their skills with families in the community. We believe that every child deserves to feel special on their birthday, and we love making personalised cakes in the child's favourite theme to help make that happen.
Although we consider direct requests from families, our preference is to work through 'partner' organisations such as children's centres, who can recommend our service to the families they know are experiencing hardship and would struggle to provide a birthday cake for their child. This helps us to ensure that our services are reaching the people that need us most.
